inkscape (www.inkscape.org) is an exceptional alternative to programs such as adobe illustrator to create vector designs. It is also very well maintained from the point of view of usability and graphic appearance.
sure for those who are accustomed to illustrator will find less elaborate filters, but the result is however high level, and versatility is surprising (especially appreciated the possibility to edit pdf files!)
