msc patran and curtain used to simulate extreme thermal conditions on satellite violet
santa ana, ca--(marketwire – 4 April 2011) – msc software (msc), the leader in the supply of multidisciplinary solutions, announced that the project team dedicated to satellite violet at the cornell university has selected the pre and postprocessor to finite elements of msc software, patran, to model and predict behavior and temperatures on the violet satellite.
The violet satellite project represents the first easily maneuverable nano-satellite. violet uses eight gyroscopes (cmgs) to implement a very precise altitude control system. inside the satellite is installed a new revolutionary flight computer called master processor. the project team uses simulation methods to verify the survival of the satellite in an extraterrestrial environment and its usability for observations and scientific measures.
Patran is an essential tool to ensure that violet is sufficiently resistant to endure the extreme conditions of space. in this regard, it was imported in patran a model of the structure of the violet satellite to simulate the thermal distribution in the worst condition, both warm and cold. after a series of analysis with patran and mayor, the advanced thermal solutor of msc, the team concluded that the violet satellite will survive the mission.
“patran meets the professional modeling and simulation standards required by the aerospace industry, allowing us to accurately predict the survival of the aircraft. without msc software, the violet satellite would not be ready for launch,” said joshua abeshaus, part of the violet satellite design team.
“We are very happy to be part of this extraordinary project carried out by the University of Cornell,” said david yuen, senior vice president, americas, msc software. “We will continue to work on how the team succeeds and can use simulation methods in new areas of research and development. ”
cornell universityCornell University Engineering College was founded in 1868 and is recognized among the top 10 engineering schools in the United States according to the latest ranking spread by the U.S. news and world report. college hosts 3051 graduates and 1426 graduates in 12 different departments. Cornell is a top-class research university with 230 professors and researchers recognized worldwide.
the project dedicated to satellite violet at the cornell university is the most recent project organized by the university in satellites with the aim of winning the university nanosat-6 flight competition, which aims to train tomorrow’s aerospace professionals through research and development projects, integration and flight tests related to satellites. for more information, visit http://www.engineering.cornell.edu or the development team of the violet satellite to http://cusat.cornell.edu/violet/index.php.
