siemens plm software, business unit of siemens industry automation division and leader in supplying software and services for product lifecycle management (plm), announced a joint project with microsoft corporation to create the first cloud computing solution for quality management in the plm industry. the solution will use the cloud computing services of the microsoft windows azureTM platform to securely turn siemens plm software’s dimensional planning and validation (dpv) application, demonstrating how cloud computing can guarantee access and use at economically advantageous conditions of quality management applications, according to the actual requirement.
the announcement was given on the occasion of the microsoft world conference partner in Washington, D.C., United States, and represents one of the many joint projects of siemens plm software and microsoft designed to demonstrate how cloud computing can be successfully combined with plm to generate value for the manufacturing industry. on 28 June last microsoft presented a demo of cloud computing based on plm and software solutions of siemens plm software to a audience of more than 1,400 participants in the siemens plm connection user conference of das.
“Development of advanced cloud computing solutions is an important part of microsoft’s commitment to ensure that our business customers get maximum value from their investments it,” said simon witts, corporate vice president, enterprise and partner group (epg), microsoft. “Our success in dealing with this commitment is not only based on our ability to establish solid and lasting relationships with our customers, but also on the collaboration with leading companies such as siemens plm software that share our commitment to guarantee the success of our customers. ”
excellent partner solutionsdpv – an integral part of the technomatix® software suite of solutions for digital manufacturing – is the first plm-based system for “closed cycle” quality management with collection, management, analysis and reporting functions of quality detection and measurement data, directly linked to real-time production results. technomatix dpv leverages teamcenter® software, the world's most popular plm system, which allows you to integrate “as-built” production information, combined with the quality data of real-time production, in the same environment used to manage product, process and production data.
Some organizations, such as remote production sites or external suppliers, although they do not need a complete infrastructure of plm resources, could nevertheless benefit from this type of advanced technology for quality management. Starting from a consolidated partnership, siemens plm software and microsoft have joined forces to create an environment in which technomatix dpv and teamcenter will operate “in the cloud” with the operating system for cloud services windows azure, using the relational database sql azureTM. In this way they can test and propose scenarios in which this plm-based quality management solution can be exploited in all its power and flexibility without the need for a complete corporate system. Once validated, the results will promote a wide dissemination of plm solutions for quality management and increase the available options for implementation through an on-demand environment.
“using the windows azure platform to manage the power of cloud computing, organizations will have the opportunity to drastically reduce infrastructure and assistance costs,” said sanjay ravi, managing director, worldwide high tech & electronics industry, microsoft. “We are proud of the work we are doing with siemens plm software in this industry and we are ready to explore new ways and ways for the simple and secure application of cloud computing at plm.”
plm in cloud environmentBesides the dpv-azure project, siemens plm software is committed with microsoft in many other initiatives aimed at effective cloud computing exploitation. For example, the demo offered on June 28 at the siemens plm connection user conference illustrated the collaborative development activity produced in the cloud environment based on the use of the windows azure platform for the safe and automatic sharing of 3d product data in jtTM and plm xml formats, among a machine builder and plant (oem) and its suppliers.
“We believe that the power and potential of cloud computing, if exploited and managed correctly, can have a significant impact on the plm industry,” said chuck grindstaff, executive vice president of products and chief technology officer, siemens plm software. “For this reason we are working side by side with industry leaders like microsoft to evaluate a range of attractive plm applications in the cloud environment. we are proud that our consolidated relationship with microsoft, thanks to which siemens plm software was the first companies in the industry to support sharepoint, allowed us to be the first provider of plm software to propose cloud computing solutions on the windows azure platform. ”
