So I mean you do not have swx, but you have only his files.. because directly from solidworks you can save in step and also in proe part files (but this I never used it and I don't know how much it works for history etc.).
ask who gives you the files to save them directly in neutral format or try pro/e prt.

you know that from solidworks or from proes you can save files in step format.

you can search for some generic programs such as spaceclaim that offer a limited period of testing of the program after free registration. spaceclaim is a direct modeler that opens various file formats and can save in step interchange formats.
