I have a parallelepiped with 5 closed sides. Except the upper one.

Come on. few ideas but that are clear.

two orthogonal mounted stage curtain slides. for motorization I would say that a certain-time boy can pull strings with discreet precision. for the reading of the coordinates I would say that for the type of application are sufficient two heidenhain optical lines with resolution to the micron.

an optical line heidenhain combined with a determined time is a waste!
to take full advantage of the accuracy of the measuring system it is necessary at least one indefinite time with an employee who is at least one v metal mechanic level. o a vi metalmezzadro

Should that oval thing be a cylinder with the horizontal axis? designed so it does not work. at least strive to make the design of a Verosimile mechanism, at least in the degrees of freedom that you can guess using paint with a big brush. . .
