3ds max: how much better than autocad 3d?

hello to everyone, I just joined the forum.
I am a professional who has been working in the building field for 10 years with 2d autocad.
from a couple of months use autocad 3d (version 2006) with discreet results for modeling. Recently I am learning to use renderings, mappings and lights and I now begin to understand the mechanisms and to take confidence.

for two days I have downloaded the trial version of 3d studio max 2010...and, after having "signed" a little, I still can't understand the real advantages that this program could give me compared to autocad 3d, for the use that I would do (relization of perspective views of interior and exterior buildings, with relative materials).
Can you help me? can it be worth facing the expense (for me high!) for the purchase of 3d studio max? Would I have benefited? What?
Thank you, your help will be very precious to me!

If it is only for modeling I would say absolutely no, if you have to deal with complex models from which to derive the drawings I would rather go on a nurbs or solid modeler, such as rhino or formz, if ever upgrade to autocad 2010, which is definitely better in 3d. if it is to make rendering, it may be, but at a much lower cost you may have sw to make of the same level, such as cinema 4d, or way.

are two programs of the same mother house but that fanno two different things:
autocad... you are better than me what it offers
3d max studies is a specialization program in rendering and animations, are two completely different planets and with specific potential.

I'd say they're not comparable, you have to figure out what you have to do.

photorealism? 3ds max
simple architectural rendering? Maybe you just want to

Thank you for having responded in a celery and pertinent manner. Your answers confirmed what I was suspecting in part. Unfortunately, the working time is always little and knowing the programmes on the market requires so much. the opinion of experts in 3d is therefore valuable extrememete.
it was already my intention to update autocad. I am pleased to learn that later versions improve 3d.
I had already talked about 4d cinema and I have seen remarkable works (architectural views) performed with this program. but is it compatible with autocad? Could I model with autocad and make renderings with 4d cinema?

Yes, it matters well by autocad, if ever try it is the best thing.
Since it only serves you, you tried by chance blender, what is free? I assure you it has nothing to envy to other commercial sw.

Okay, thank you. You're great.
Today I can't, but from tomorrow I am active in downloading blender and also the trial version of 4d cinema.
Then I'll let you know how it went.
Have a good day!

I realized there is a universe of programs. I made a ladder and proceed with order. I hope I don't get lost in a broom and find as soon as possible the ideal software/i for my renderings. as for the modeling...be' for now I remain faithful to autocad, duly updated (I am activating).
Thanks to you too. I hope to return soon to the forum with more specific questions and contributions.

by autocad I do not understand that cinema4d amounts very well, exporting from autocad in 3ds and then importing into cinema then yes, but this operation works well only if there are models with many (a hundred) elements.

I tell you this by personal experience, with version 10... I don't know.

for particular models I do not mean a series of cubes and parallelepipeds.. . .

and then shape what would you recommend to a very confused architect to make rendering of architectural views to be used especially for commercial billboards?
I don't need an extremely refined result. ..even if the renders of rosario975 are surprising and extremely appealing, I do not aspy (for now) to such results.
give me your opinion.

My experiences, few, were positive with c4d, but with dxf I think. the question according to me is to check well the exchange of files, also because of sw of rendering there are really many. between autocad and maxwell there is no direct exchange as for plugins, but I have never tried, it is also true that maxwell is similar (unbiased) are the simplest to configure, it is like taking a photo, but also the slowest...but setting a maked is not simple...so.
I recommend you to check the autocad rendering engine 2010 and see if you like, then if ever "play" a bit with blender, you will surely find many tutorials in Italian on how to exchange files with autocad, and then try others.
