Hello, I am trying to use solidworks 2018.
after opening any step file, I don't understand how to edit. If they select "change function" asks me to open a file, as if I had selected "open file", I don't understand. Do I have to set some parameters in some menu to edit a step file? It seems that no one has ever had this problem. thanks for the help

a step file is an interchange file between different cads.
native geometry cannot be modified unless it is transformed into a series of functions containing sketches.
but these sketches are always completely subdefined and arbitrary. functions can be piloted, but with many limits.
If you don't know how to use the program, I'm totally shocking you because you wouldn't know what to do with it or where to put hands on it.
instead it has to do the internal tutorials (press the menu ?) that teaches to use correctly the various ambirents and the basic functions
it seems that no one has ever had this problem
I don't know what discussions you have read (if any of this forum reports) but maybe because the step used it to remake the model with their hands

good advice of a method I never had forgotten
Direct change uses the functions you find within the menu insert>fa.
what links is a demonstration video for advanced users, who already know the program and already know that functions are used; in fact to select the functions use shortcuts with contextual menus and mouse gestures that for those who chew little or nothing does not allow to understand what is done, but only what can be done.
my advice for masadani is that if the solid is an esemplice to remake it so as to learn having a concrete model to compare with your work.

it can be that with the new settings of solidworks 2018 opens the step file as unique together without being able to change it and he won't even ask you to make face correction. if so go into the feauture manage to the left and to the first function in the top clicks with the right and unsolved selections function. It will tell you that if you press it you cannot go back and you will have your beautiful together as in previous editable versions.

I don't use it so much either, I find it a bit of a force in the way it got used to working with sw, but I think it's the way I learned how to use sw and from which I struggle to detach myself.
Maybe for the new levers is the egg of colombo. :

If a particular is well done, it is hardly necessary to resort to those commands.
I came back very useful (as well as to change the steps) to maybe move some tubular of a carpentry, rather than put me there to edit all the sketch (I have the handle of 3d sketches but all the times that there is to change them you risk to explode).
with a couple of clicks you can move a given entity a body or a face.
There are constraints as in the ambient together.

It's a great command, reminds a little of the non-parametric way of working, as much as the "history" of the changes still appears in the tree.

the video is "complicated" but is the most explanatory one I found.
if at masadani interests to deepen there are at the will of video tutorials simpler.
without counting that with the online guide has everything explained ( enough) well.

Have a good day! !

Good evening,
I really thank all of the answers and the interventions.
I would like to answer with the following points by clarifying a little the history that has brought me to this forum:
- I come from solidworks 2014 and I never happened to use a stp or igs file
- after some time since the installation of the 2018 version, magically, has emerged the need to use files from stp or igs for various couplings in axiemi and so far everything well
- the need to change a stp emerged when I was asked to use an aluminum profile dierre to build a structure; I then downloaded the 3d stp directly from the supplier's website and found that no modification was possible; I then searched for help in this forum
- after the answer mammals, which I thank, I contacted an old university teacher and explained how to do, i.e. "featureworks -> recognition functions". Unfortunately I found out I had the "recognition functions" disabled, that is in faded gray....
- after a few days I read the post MechanicalThank you. I just tried to do as you say I learned that the "dissolve function" does not exist but I have instead "destroy unused function" but I don't think it's the same thing and still trying it does nothing.. .
- I tried to test these functions with various stp and igs of different suppliers, of very different parts between them, but the fact is that this "recognition functions" is disabled
- if you do not mind I attach the stp file that I would like to edit, i.e., stretch or even just copy the profile base to another file; if you have time give me feedback
- but the main question at this point is: how do you enable the "featureworks -> recognition functions" when it is disabled?? I've been trying for two weeks, but I haven't done anything.

thanks for reading

Are you getting crazy for a piece like that?
you model it from scratch in a few minutes, otherwise as you should do if you have to build a structure using that aluminum profile you get the profile sketch and then use it with the structural members
I train you how it would go out with the featureworks (2 image)
Come on, it's like making a convert entity only that the feature works put a couple of odds

from options....files step...look that there is the option to activate in the import/export card....vado by memory....and there also activate the thing that steps from changing to not changing the imported

Hi.
Thank you again for the support.
first of all I wanted to tell mammals that in reality the biggest problem is not this single profile that I could do quietly from scratch but the functionality I miss for everything that could come in the future.
I cut out the screens of what you suggested to me to check and I attached a zipped doc. in practice what asks me to look Mechanical In fact, it's very interesting and I think I'm going to do some w-e tests.
rightly mammals it told me to check the check that in fact there is, in fact featureworks is present and active but it is disable the "recognition functions" within it.
if you have other comments, ideas say as well; I sin from your lips.

thanks and good evening

the more the step is complicated the worse it will get a changeable model.
the recognition of functions is very aleatory because you can tell them that it works to get the model, but then not how to manage them and you can find yourself with simple or tangled sketches (sometimes not completely defined).
basic one step should remain such and make us over jute some adjustments as to remove or add material, not thinking of overturning its shape.
commands, if necessary, to change a step there are already and are basically those under the heading functions> face and possibly scale.

do a doc to insert 2 pictures I really miss seeing it.
n reality the biggest problem is not this single profile that I could do quietly from scratch but the functionality that I miss for everything that could come in the future.
of this you have spoken and of this has been referred. there is not the same solution for everything like this and it is useless to wrap your head with What will I do if.

90 % of the times that you have to change a step heavily you should do it again making it manageable and simplifying it to make it lighter possible
