dear all,
I am configuring the new home computer and as from the title I am undecided among the following processors:

1 - intel core i7-4820k processor ( 10m cache, up to 3.90 ghz)
2 - intel core i7-4770k processor (8m cache, up to 3.90 ghz)

Whereas, with my bugdet (about 900€), I would associate to one of these 16 gb ram memory and a video card of the asus gtx650-e-2gd5 type, to have the necessary money for the other remaining components (asus mother card or gigabyte - homes - cpu dissipator - hard disk - power supply ).

I use programs such as rhino and solidworks for modeling 3d, while in recent times I am also interested in the appearance of cfd and structural simulation.

reading on the internet seems to me that the two processors are almost equivalent about performance, with some substantial difference (over the different socket and then the dual or quad channel rams, both incorporated the avx instruction, which seems to be important for all those 3d graphics programs and numerical calculation, and in particular the 4770k should have the avx2.0 ).

according to your experience what would you recommend? !
Thank you for your patience.

Hi smashy1985! !
both the one and the other go well as cpu only you have to understand for cfd and structural simulations how much ram you go to exploit.
personally I have a strong sympathy for the 2011 socket in fact work with an i7 3820 brought to 4.2ghz and I am very well.
The 2011 socket motherboards allow you to stay up to 64gb ram and in some cases even more, they also have a greater number of different ports and express pci slots.
the 2011 socket when I assembled my ws I saw it longer but other users could tell you the opposite.
try to choose two different motherboards for 4770k and 4820k and build on your pc if the final price and similar would opt for a 2011 soket even if your budget is a little low for the latter.

dear taurus77,
First of all I thank you for the solicitous answer and for the advice!! but I would like to take advantage of your availability to ask for clarification. What do you mean when you say "... do you have to understand for cfd and structural simulations how much ram you go to exploit"??
if it can be useful to mark you that for simulations I also use ansys and especially cfx for fluid dynamics! !
I can also tell you that looking around tutorials and documents that help me learn how to set up nautical-related simulations I have seen that to start models never exceed 800000 knots. I hope you can understand me! )
As for the budget I saw that good or bad at equal parts (hd, houses, heatsink, power supply, video card etc) the solution with the 4770k + motherboard and ram suitable for the socket 1150 would cost me about 820€ while that with 4820k + motherboard and ram suitable for the socket 2011 would cost me about 890€! !

happy to answer and help you.
time ago I had pointed out to another user that it takes about 1gb of ram each million degrees freedom if for example you have 800000 knots that are the tops of a tetrahedron and each node performs 3 shifts and a rotation in the simplest case of static linear analysis you get 800000x4=3200000 dof (degree of freedom) and you need about 3.2 gb of ram over that system.
if you pour out some documentation of ansys this statement that I made you should find it (I took it from the pdf of ansys guides when I studied assisted design of mechanical structures).
consider that windows 7 pro absorbs only about 4,5-4,7gb of ram (at this moment the task manager to me indicates 4,63 with 7 web pages open on firefox + antivurus and various stupidities).
according to my point of view 16 gb are the minimum today to be able to work serenely then with the socket 2011 you can get to 64gb.
on the 2011 socket you can also insert i7 3960 extreme and xeon e5 various put the case that in a few years you find with good luck...(c..lo) a rotten procio or coming from a dismantled platform you do an upgrade and you are fine with the other platform this game you cannot do it.
insert a good ssd that gives you a bust of life.

Make sure you might have a problem with that system.
my win7pro64 with antivirus, double firewall, various ameniccles and this web page, takes 2.1 - 2.3 gb of ram
the win 32 same conditions, without web page, only 1.1 gb

Hello crystal! !
everything ok! windows adapts the ram used according to how much it has available in total.
with high quantities of installed ram absorbs more in my case on 64gb the occupied ram is about 6 -7%.

Hi.

I think you have something that sucks a little too much. I have all workstations at 16 gb and win7 eats 2.65 gb with open internet.

Thank you guys!! you put the flea in the head I checked the processes in the task manager and it seems ok anyway place two screenshots so you give us a look1.webp2.webp
